Commoner is a Tucson-based band delivering a resounding and melodic blend of emo, alternative, and post-hardcore. Their sound captures raw emotion through dynamic shifts, balancing heavy, cathartic moments with stripped-back vulnerability. Founded by Romin Mattison after creating the EP Japanese Apartments as a personal outlet, Commoner solidified its lineup with bassist Matthew Bryant and later added Jeremy Buck, Beto Marroquin, and Tyler Casillo, forging a unique collective sonic identity.
In 2023 and 2024, the band traveled to Los Angeles to record with producer Zach Tuch (Touche Amore, Knocked Loose, Zulu), whose expertise helped shape their emerging sound. The Winter Promo features tracks like “Misery Mistaken” and “Whatever’s Left is Yours,” which channel themes of abandonment, neglect, and healing into powerful anthems, setting the stage for their upcoming EP, slated for release in March.
As part of this effort, Commoner collaborated with Photographic Memory (Glare, Wisp) to remix one of their singles, reimagining it with added depth and atmosphere. This collaboration birthed “Scar to Fade,” a standout track that highlights the band’s ability to evolve while staying true to their emotional core.
Drawing influence from the 2010s emo resurgence and early 2000s alternative acts like Citizen, Movements, Incubus, and Fuel, Commoner brings their diverse inspirations to life through dynamic live performances. Their shows create an inclusive, high-energy atmosphere where fans feel deeply connected to the music. With plans to tour extensively and a 2025 EP on the horizon, Commoner continues to push forward, delivering music that is honest, heartfelt, and unforgettable.
